Balloons: A source of Happiness

Balloons: A Source of Happiness

Balloons are used at weddings.
Balloons are given at birthdays.
Balloons are given at Valentines.
Balloons are given at graduations.
Balloons are given at anniversaries.
Balloons are used at social gatherings.
Balloons are released at sporting events.
Balloons are given to wish someone well.

In most cases,

...balloons brings hope to the hopeless.
...balloons provides a festive background
...balloons puts a smile in a child's face.
...balloons turns a sad tear into a joyful one.
...balloons seals and confirms a commitment.

On the topic of balloons, Andrew Huang put together a great video using balloons to piece together a song called "99 Red Balloons".

I hope the video brings a few giggles and some happiness.

My Favorite MV for September 2014

Every month I try to pick a favorite music video (MV).  This month the one that caught my eye is the one that is sung by "Della丁噹".  I believe it is a promotion for an upcoming drama called Sound of the Desert (formerly, Da Mo Yao, Legend of the Moon and Star)

The selection was based on the singing and the musical accompaniment consisting of various instruments including a piano, various strings, and a flute). Together with the video clips from the drama makes it my favorite MV for this month.

This music video trigger my memory of the "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" detailing "the turbulent years towards the end of the Han dynasty."  I have always enjoyed reading about the different leaders including Liu Bei and Zhuge Liang.

I am curious about the new drama, but probably wait before it becomes available in the states.

My Favorite MV for August 2014

Henry Lau Cho Young-pil
OK... I thought I share with you my favorite music video for last month (not necessary the latest).  After much deliberation (if you believe that), I am selecting Henry Lau's (of Super Junior-M) cover of  Cho Yong-pil's 'BOUNCE'   I love he adds the various sound tracks as the music video progresses creating a unique and entertaining video.

'Henry's Real Music : You, Fantastic' Ep.5. Cho Yong-pil's 'BOUNCE' by Henry

The cover is based on Cho Yong-pil who is highly regarded as well known industry as the "king" of Korean pop music.  Over his career he has performed around the world including Carnegie Hall.  It is always worth viewing and listening to the original artist and song.  The song does have some bounce.  :)

Great job to Henry Lau and SM Entertainment and special kudos to Cho Yong-pil.

Amazing Acapella Groups Performing the "Cup Song" (Pitch Perfect)

cup song
I was first introduced to the "Cup Song" while watching the movie Pitch Perfect movie. The movie is about a freshman, played by Anna Kendrick, entering college faced with not only class selection, but needs to make a decision on club to join. She decides on join, but would need to do an audition. Her audition consist of singing and using a cup as her instrumental accompaniment.  A scene from of her audition can be found on YouTube.

Since the release of the movie in 2011, there have been several covers released on YouTube, which range from vocal to instrumentals.  The ones that caught my attention are the Acapella groups.  Below I have included a few performed in different languages.   I am amazed at how they simultaneously sign and do the cup routine.   Or maybe it is just me.   Anyways, enjoy and maybe you can start learning the cup routine (BTW....check out a great tutorial done by Kristina G.).  LOL !!!

Gun version [Added - 1/1/2015]
There have been many renditions of the "Cup Song" since my last post.  This week, I came across this one that was both entertaining and hilarious. Interestingly, Jim Huish, the creator of the video is also part of a band called Amber's Drive.

Top Places to Go When It Heats Up

Summer has just started and temperatures is expected to reach over 90 degrees F (32 degrees C), you will need to find ways to cool down.  Below are a few places that we have found ways of beating the heat in the Bay Area.

santa cruz beach and boardwalk

Aqua Adventure

The park convenient located in Fremont and conveniently located about 10 minutes away from either the 680 or 880 Freeway.

At the time of the writing, general admission (for those who are over 48" in height) is $17.99 and junior admission (under 48") is $12.99. Please check the website for updated pricing and any specials.

I would highly recommend renting a 10'x10' cabana as it includes food service. You would to order the food service in the 3-day advance. By going this route, you can avoid the long food lines.

Also, it would is a nice retreat and great resting area especially if you have toddlers that occasionally need some rest and relaxation.  Of course, it might be a refuge for one parent as the other wade in the pool with the children.  It is worth the money.

Santa Cruz Beach Broadwalk

Santa Cruz Beach and Broadwalk has everything for everybody.  For the young, there are rides tailored for children from the young and old.  Teenagers will venture on the coasters while the young can experience some of the tamer rides.  The entire family will enjoy an ride on the historical carousel which has been in operation since 1911. Another family favorite is the Sky Glider as the ride spans the length of the park allowing you a great overview of all the attractions.

For those that just want to relax, there are miles of beach where you can pitch your gear to sit and relax on the nice warm sand.  Many families pack their lunch or purchase food from the many food vendors located along the boardwalk.

Overall, you and your family will be able to enjoy and relax.  You will not be disappointed.

Most Adorable Taiwanese Twins - Zony and Yony

I first discovered a interesting story on a Twitter post and an article about two Taiwanese twins performing a dance.

I was fascinated by their routine and it led me to do some additional research.  At a cute age of 6, both became famous literally overnight as their YouTube post went viral performing the Cover "Bar Bar Bar" originally performed by Crayon Pop.

The folks at Ellen Show took noticed  and invited the twins to perform on the show.  It was televised this week and can be seen below.

Source: +TheEllenShow

Update (6/12/2015):  In May 2015, they were invited back to celebrate their birthday as well as to sing perform another number.  They have been also been invited back a few times after their first debut on the Ellen Show.

Source: +TheEllenShow

I would highly recommend  viewing  the original "Bar Bar Bar" music video performed by Crayon Pop to contrast the two videos.  By doing so, it will raise the cute factor!!! LOL

5 Must See Places for First Time Visitors to California

On many occasions, my relatives or friends would ask me for recommendations on places to visit in California.  Before making my determination, I would determine if they have children, the age of children, the average age of the group, and their interest.  Over the years, I have developed a list of places and now I thought I include it in my blog.

View Top 5 Exciting Places in California in a larger map

1.  San Francisco

In my opinion, San Francisco  is by far  the most diverse city in California.  The city has everything for everybody regardless of your background, ethnicity, age, interest, and beliefs. The city is rich with culture and diversity all within minutes by car.  Of course, there is the usual landmarks, the Golden Gate Bridge, Nob Hill, the Presidio,  Lombard, and the cable car rides.  But you would feel cheated if you do not some of the jewels of the city.  Instead of listing the sights, I would refer you several sites that do a nice job of describing the sights of the city.

2. Lake Tahoe

About 310 miles from San Francisco is an oasis that is enjoyed by many.  With its pristine lake and snow cap mountains, the Lake Tahoe area leaves you breathless.  I would highly recommend making a trip around the lake stopping at some of the look-ups and rest stops to relax and capture the beauty. Make to visit booth North and South Lake Tahoe.

3.  Disneyland

A must see place if you are visiting California with children.  It is labeled as the happiest place on earth.  The crowds and long lines can turn your experience to a nightmare.  To make it more enjoyable, here are a few sites to provide excellent tips to make your trip enjoyable and memorable:

4.  LEGOLAND - California Resort

deborah chiu legoland

The nice thing about LEGOLAND is that the part is tailored for kids 14 years or younger and it is a hit for toddlers as wells as children that are 9 years and younger.  The older kids will not appreciate this park as there are no large roller coasters or death defying rides.

The LEGOLAND includes all the fun rides, a water park, and a hotel.  The themed hotel is conveniently nestled inside the park so makes it convenient for those young ones (or adults) that need to take naps or are just fussy.  I would highly recommend booking early to beat the holiday crowds.  Overall, I felt that was less crowded and less stressful compared to the other themed parks.

For the adults and/or parents that want to break away, there is the Carlsbad Premium Outlets which is the home of over 30 designer and brand name stores.  The outlets are located between HWY5 and LEGOLAND.

5. Yosemite National Park

I am always amazed with the scenery here at this national park.  There is always something to see with its perfect picturesque landscape.  Of course behind the beauty of this place there are dangers.  The National Park Service has published important safety tips for those planning their first trip.

Top 3 Places to get Dim Sum in Silicon Valley

Top 3 Places to get Dim Sum in Silicon Valley

If you are like me, I would occasionally have cravens for dim sum.  At times it would be in the mornings.  Of course, I could drive up to San Fran for the best dim sum in Northern California.  However, by the time I have changed and put on my make-up, the desire for those irresistible dumplings are diminished.

To fulfill some those temporary urges, I have discovered a few dim sum places located in Silicon Valley that serve the 'meanest' dim sums.

My Comments
There is nothing fancy about this place....the usual restaurant chairs/tables.  However, the dim sum is authentic and AMAZING!  It is nestled with two other restaurants.  So, parking can be a bit challenging.  I do recommend coming early 10:30 a.m. to get a table and to beat the crowd.  It is great to know they are open 365 days a year!

Dim Sum King

Sunnyvale, CA 94087

My Comments
This is place is more of a take-out place...so, don't expect any carts going up and down the aisles (there are only 3 tables in this place).  Their menu selection is somewhat limited.  However, they do have my favorites....BBQ Pork Buns and Egg Tarts.  I can now order great dim sum if I am ever on the go!

4 Amazing Global Flash Mob Videos

I have always admired flash mob.  It takes a lot of coordination, planning, and practice.  When it is "showcase", it is amazing!

Here are my top 4 picks for flash mob videos.  They range from use of various instruments, to singing to dancing.   My favorite is the one done in the Korean Drama, Dream High.  I know it is probably staged, but I love the synchronized dance moves.

[ 4 ]  Flash Mob Chorus in Taipei 101, Taiwan

A great performance of popular Taiwanese and Chinese songs performed in the food court of Taipei 101 in Taiwan.

The songs performed are:
Green Island Serenade (lv-dao-xiao-ye-qu), Jasmine (mo-li-hua), Spring Breeze (wang-chun-feng) and Mountain is Green (gao-shan-qing).

[ 3 ]  Histolashmob in Antwerp train station, do re mi

A great synchronized dance routine performed at a Belgium Train station (Antwerp).  The flash mob was done to the song Do-Re-Mi  (from the Sound of Music sung by Julie Andrews).

[ 2 ]  Flashmob Marchingband TSV Lauf

The Marching Band Flashmob was performed by the TSV Lauf Marchingband complete with drummers and color guards.  The performance took place on April 27, 2013 in front of "Weißer Turm" in Nuremberg.

Check out also the making of the flash mob at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_flLz-...

[ 1 ]  Dream High Flash Mob

My number 1 flash mob is from the Korean drama, Dream High (Episode #16).  It was probably staged, but it appears to be random.   There are special appearance by 2AM Jinwoon, Changmin, Seulong, missA Jia, Fei, Min.
